A NEW DOOR

If you’re going to buy a new door, make sure you protect your investment by making the right decision from the get-go.

Wood vs. Fiberglass

I recommend fiberglass doors if you’re looking for a durable, everlasting product that requires little-to-no upkeep. Fiberglass doors can withstand most any weather conditions. You can get a traditional fiberglass door or one that is designed to look like natural wood, which can then be stained and varnished or painted.

Painting is always a good option if you can’t or don’t want to bother with the maintenance of staining.

There is nothing so beautiful as a natural wood door, but they can be a bit high-maintenance depending on a variety of factors (exposure, the direction the door is facing, etc.). Here are a few things to consider:

  1. Choose mahogany or Spanish cedar. These types of wood are extremely resilient – if neglected for a length of time, the damage can often be repaired without consequence.
  2. Go with a darker stain. Lighter stains are more susceptible to visible damage .
  3. If you don’t call me to refinish your door, be sure to to use a spar urethane, at least three coats on all sides. Also, if the sun hits your door, refinish it annually.
